History of Mohammed Shrine
Mohammed Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S., located in the Peoria area in the heart of Illinois, received its charter on June 14, 1893, and thus became the 65th Temple in the Imperial Council. From a humble beginning of 34 members, 111 years ago, Mohammed now boasts a membership of over 2,400 members.
The early meetings of Mohammed Shrine were held in the Main Street Masonic Temple and by 1907 the membership had outgrown those quarter, and plans were started to erect a Mosque. In 1908 the 207 N.E. Monroe Street, Peoria, Illinois site location was purchased and the following year the building was started. On October 17, 1910, the Mosque was acclaimed one of the finest in the land. This was the home of Mohammed's nobility until March 21, 1936, when the building was destroyed by fire.
Undaunted, like the 34 original members, Mohammed started the construction of a new Mosque and on October 14, 1938, dedicated our second home. The Mosque was clearly one of Shrinedom's finest.
Once membership hit its peak of 10,000 members, membership has been in a steady decline since. In the mid-80's it was clear that our Mosque was far more than our membership could maintain or support. Unpopular plans were communicated to the membership and in general the membership was unwilling to accept the fact that in order to survive the Mosque must be sold or lost.
In 2001 the Mosque was sold to the Riverside Church and the Shrine moved to temporary quarters at 4207 N. Prospect Road, Peoria Heights, for nearly two years. In early 2003 the Shrine was once again relocated in a temporary home at 1707 W. Chanute Road. In late 2003 Mohammed Shrine purchased property at 4201 S. Industry Drive, Bartonville and after remodeling the Shrine was re-located here and we now call this our home.
Mohammed Shrine is justly proud of its membership, outstanding leaders in both business and social activities of not only our community, but of the nation as well.
